Press release: 7 local NGOs gained knowledge and skills as watchdogs in the field of segregation in education

The Center for Advocacy and Human Rights Association (CADO) announces the completion of training courses for experts selected from the 7 NGOs from the counties of Brașov, Cluj, Constanța, Ialomița, Maramureș, Mureș and Prahova in order to train them as watchdogs in monitoring segregation in education and in carrying out advocacy actions from local to European level for the defense and promotion of children's rights to non-discrimination and quality education.

The courses were held online between 17-28 May 2021 and covered 3 main training themes: advocacy, monitoring school segregation and legal counseling of victims.

The information gained from the training program will help local monitors fulfill their responsibilities regarding monitoring school segregation in 880 localities in 11 counties, conducting advocacy campaigns and providing legal advice to victims of segregation.

The participants are representatives of local NGOs active at the level of 7 counties (Aici Pentru Tine – Brașov; Asociatia Elevilor Constanța; CENRES – Cluj; RomaJust Asociatia Juristilor Romi – Ialomița; Young Roma Maramureș- Maramureș; Rază de Speranța – Mureș and the Association Community Development Agency Buzau – Prahova).

Roxana Șerban (Association of Students from Constanța): "I came to these courses with a backup behind me as a former student representative, and I understood how the education system in Romania works. These courses helped me deepen some knowledge because I did not work exclusively on the subject of segregation in schools, but on more general issues. All three modules will help me even after the completion of this project in the activity I carry out in the community".

Eugen Ghiță (Roma Just Association - Ialomița): "It is an opportunity to train the staff and volunteers in our organization strictly on the issue of segregation. We didn't have as much information for people going into the field as we do now, attending these courses."
